Dismantling The Nice Girl: A Weekend of Fierce and True Writing

Dismantling The Nice Girl A Weekend of Fierce and True Writing With Laurie Wagner and Sonya Lea October 26-28, 2018 Alameda, California [$475] 7:30PM – 9:30PM Friday 9:30AM – 4:30PM Saturday/Sunday Delicious vegetarian catered lunch Saturday/Sunday How do you tell a story that has been pushed underground? How do you tell a story that’s never been told? A story that might have been (or still is) a secret? Especially as women, how do we sustain the telling of a story when there’s pressure to remain likable? When it’s not just our characters that publishers and readers insist be likable, but our very thinking? And how do we push past the shame created by those who refuse our power? Here we are, living in an urgent era, one that asks us to risk exposure for ourselves, and on behalf of others. By standing in the truth, and acknowledging the necessity of our writing, we change the justness and health of our communities. We take a stand for those who aren’t living with our privilege or resources. This weekend is about interrogating what we are afraid to write about, how we can write our truth and risk exposure, how to say the things that demand to be said. We will discuss strategies for overcoming the pressure to be someone else, how bravery might be in our bones, how to find the strength to reckon with the full truth on the page, how to be with what’s ugly and unspeakable. LAURIE & SONYA: Laurie Wagner & Sonya Lea met twenty years ago when they were writing about women’s bodies, women gods, and...

As a writer, she asks: Who do we have to become to find the forms and sacred language with which to meet these times? Deena is a teacher’s teacher, and she’s been my mentor for 15 years. I wouldn’t be the writer or the teacher I am without her guidance. Writing with Deena is an unforgettable experience that leaves everyone who works with her changed. Whether you’re a new writer who is beginning to explore your stories and find a voice to tell them, or a more seasoned writer who wants to continue to unpeel the layers and go even deeper, this writing retreat will serve you. Workshop in Mexico with Laurie Wagner + Andrea Scher!

Workshop in Mexico with Laurie Wagner + Andrea Scher!

New dates for San Miguel de Allende! Hey Friends! Great news! Andrea and I sold out our January 2019 session in 48 hours! So we decided to add another session! The dates for this workshop will be May 7th-12th, 2019. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico is one of my favorite places in the world! It’s full of beauty and art, warm + friendly people and incredible architecture. It’s a place full of color and amazing food and the streets are full of life at night. Andrea and I had the pleasure of taking a group there this year to explore + learn + create and it was ah-mazing.) The city attracts artists and lovers of art because the light there is magic. It’s that painterly sort of light that exists in a handful of places in the world and it always fills me with awe. It’s a place where you want to drink in the terra cotta walls, walk for hours on the cobblestone streets and peek into hidden artist studios. It’s a place where you want to create. (And sit in chairs with wings!) My dear friend Andrea Scher and I are taking a small group of creative folks back to San Miguel in May 2019. (May 7th-12th, 2019 to be exact.) We will be exploring, writing, storytelling, taking lots of photos and having one of the most creative and delicious adventures we’ve ever had! Our days will be a perfect blend of Wild Writing, creative photography exercises, storytelling and exploring this magical city together. We’ll learn from local artisans, take a food tour of the city (total foodie paradise!), take photo...
