Rediscovering Your Story

with Steve Edwards

MONDAY, MAY 5TH, 2025

9:00 – 11:00AM PT

A story is a negotiation between what might have been, what is, and what still could be. You tell the story of who you are with your every breath. You become the stories you tell

– Steve Edwards

Sometimes we know ourselves too well. We become so familiar with our lives that our stories of them feel stale and ordinary; we take for granted the memorable things we have seen and done; we forget that to a reader who doesn’t know us we have lived fascinating lives worthy of examination.

This class with essayist, Steve Edwards, is about rediscovering-and reimagining-the stories we have to tell. Through a series of writing prompts designed to stoke our memories and remind us of who we are, we’ll tap back into the basics of storytelling while also getting reacquainted with why telling our particular stories matter.

A few things you’ll come away with:

✨New and inventive approaches to telling nonfiction, personal stories.
✨Inspiration for getting started and sticking with it.
✨The confidence to make mistakes and learn from them.
✨A sense of how to pair personal discoveries with practice, including:

How to incorporatesensory language, build forward momentum in a narrative, and utilize the modes of scene and summary to give a piece shape.

✨A sense of what makes our stories matter.

You don’t need to be a seasoned writer to join us, but someone who is interested in telling personal stories and is ready for a guide

Here at 27 Powers, we love bringing a variety of published writers into our community to teach. More and more, what we’re looking for isn’t just someone who can teach something, but someone who cares about students, who loves teaching and is committed to leaving students with something solid they can work with. Steve is all of these things and more. We are thrilled to have him with us, and hope you can join us.
