Each of our stories is a universe. Each one of us is living a story. To discoverits shape and essence is essential to soul making.” It is with great pleasure that 27 Powers welcomes back writer, teacher and healer, Deena Metzger A poet, novelist, essayist, storyteller and medicine woman who has taught and counseled for over forty years, Deena has spent a lifetime investigating Story as a form of knowing and healing. As a writer, she asks: Who do we have to become to find the forms and sacred language with which to meet these times? Deena is a teacher’s teacher, and she’s been my mentor for 15 years. I wouldn’t be the writer or the teacher I am without her guidance. Writing with Deena is an unforgettable experience that leaves everyone who works with her changed. Whether you’re a new writer who is beginning to explore your stories and find a voice to tell them, or a more seasoned writer who wants to continue to unpeel the layers and go even deeper, this writing retreat will serve you. Through writing and discussion we will move into the layered worlds of our stories. We’ll discover new aspects of the story that we didn’t know existed. You will write all weekend, you will be witnessed, you will be heard and ultimately...
The Flunky Brilliance of Opening the Kimono

The Flunky Brilliance of Opening the Kimono

This may come as a surprise to people who know me and my work with the Wild Writing practice, where for the last 20 years I have taught people to write as poorly as possible and to release the parts of themselves that they use to impress others, but I don’t like making mistakes. I have built an entire career modeling how to show up as our authentic bed headed selves, messy, transparent and real, on the page and off. My students might tell you that I’m good at it, but it doesn’t come easily for me; the need to impress and be loved is so strong, and which is why I teach so many classes a week. I’m a really slow learner. The Wild Writing practice is in service of authenticity and what it means to show up on the page naturally, without effort and edifice. To show up without mask and armor, and to let people see who we actually are as human beings so that we can make real contact with them through our writing. We do this on the page, but over the years, what we do on the page leaks into our lives and if we’re lucky, we begin to show up more authentically and naturally there too. After 25 years of doing the work on the page, I’m happy to say that I’m finally getting better at messing up more in real life. Sometimes it’s expensive, like when I watched the metal lemon squeezer slip down the sink and into the garbage disposal last month. Or how I ignored the front door key...
Workshop in Mexico with Laurie Wagner + Andrea Scher!

Workshop in Mexico with Laurie Wagner + Andrea Scher!

New dates for San Miguel de Allende! Hey Friends! Great news! Andrea and I sold out our January 2019 session in 48 hours! So we decided to add another session! The dates for this workshop will be March 17th-22th, 2019. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico is one of my favorite places in the world! It’s full of beauty and art, warm + friendly people and incredible architecture. It’s a place full of color and amazing food and the streets are full of life at night. Andrea and I had the pleasure of taking a group there this year to explore + learn + create and it was ah-mazing.) The city attracts artists and lovers of art because the light there is magic. It’s that painterly sort of light that exists in a handful of places in the world and it always fills me with awe. It’s a place where you want to drink in the terra cotta walls, walk for hours on the cobblestone streets and peek into hidden artist studios. It’s a place where you want to create. (And sit in chairs with wings!) My dear friend Andrea Scher and I are taking a small group of creative folks back to San Miguel in March 2019. (March 17th-22th, 2019 to be exact.) We will be exploring, writing, storytelling, taking lots of photos and having one of the most creative and delicious adventures we’ve ever had! Our days will be a perfect blend of Wild Writing, creative photography exercises, storytelling and exploring this magical city together. We’ll learn from local artisans, take a food tour of the city (total foodie paradise!), take photo...
